Classes are the core of the Beverley Street Studio School education program. Weekend workshops support the intent of the classes, while allowing the student to more intensely focus on a particular medium or technique. A variety of classes are offered during the fall, winter and spring quarters, and workshops are offered throughout the year.

This course involves study in the structure and nature of painting, with special focus on issues and process pertinent to plein air landscape painting. Instruction emphasizes personal development through individual and group assignments, projects and critique. Class is open only to students with previous experience and/or instruction in painting or drawing. Beginner level students are accepted only on special approval of the instructor. Participants may work in any painting and/or drawing medium. Class will meet outdoors whenever weather permits.

Included are metering/exposure control, shutter speeds/motion, aperture/depth of field, ISO, resolution, and more. Students taking class for the first time will be introduced to basic tools and techniques of using enamel as a medium for wall work. The main theme of the class will concentrate on copper surface using sheet metal and foil. Image and color will be created by focusing on use of fluxes.

In this class, we will explore the fundamentals of drawing portraits - starting with the shape of the skull, progressing to basic proportions and individual features, and concluding with character and likeness. This workshop is for the absolute beginner who feels intimidated about drawing but really wants to get started. You will be shown how to use simple tools and simple methods to help you draw. The workshop is also for those who cannot attend a regular daytime class or just wants more time to continue honing skills and making progress with the medium of your choice.

In this workshop we will explore the medium of watercolor, emphasizing the basics of working with this beautiful and varied medium in which so much is possible. We will experiment with mixing color, watercolor washes, texture and basic sketching techniques. We will also work with some mixed media as watercolor combines well with other mediums such as pastel and charcoal. We will make some larger experimental paintings as well as more finished paintings with subjects drawn from the environment of the studio and the surrounding landscape or from still life. The class is geared toward beginners but also appropriate for those with more experience. Workshop size allows each person to receive individual attention no matter the experience level.
Frances Dowdy and Ellen Martin - Getting to Know Your Digital Camera

This introductory workshop offers small group instruction to help you become familiar with your camera and its functions. Bring your digital point and shoot or SLR camera. Please be sure to bring your instruction manual, a card for your camera and a fully charged battery.

We will work from multiple set ups focusing on the use of tone and color to make light, simplification of objects into masses of forms, and lost edges to help create space and atmosphere. Paintings will be done quickly on paper starting with 45 minute studies and moving up to 2-3 hour paintings. Medium: Oil, Acrylic

Students
will learn to make collages using acrylic gels, watercolor and colored
gessoes on paper or canvas. In the introductory session (Fri evening)
students will prepare surfaces for collage. On following days, instruction
will focus on design and color as students develop collage methods and
techniques.

MEMBERSHIP - BSSS one year membership
is available at a cost of $30 per person, $50 per family, and $20 per
young adult (13 to 25). Your membership entitles you to a $30 discount
on each class/workshop, as well as other offers made throughout the year.

CANCELLATION / CHANGES POLICIES:
WEATHER - When the Augusta County Schools are closed because
of inclement weather, BSSS is also closed. Please listen to your local
stations or contact BSSS at 540/886-8636.
CLASSES / WORKSHOPS - are subject to minimum enrollment standards. If the minimum is not met, your class/workshop may be cancelled. In this event, your tuition will be fully refunded.
SCHEDULE CHANGE - You will be notified should a necessary schedule change occur.
PRE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE: If there is not sufficient registration, a class may be cancelled one(1) week prior to start, and a workshop ten(10) days prior to start. This policy is to allow instructors ample time to plan and prep for upcoming classes/workshops. Registration taken within one week of a class/workshop will not be eligible for the member discount rate.
NON-REFUNDABLE CHARGE: A $25 non-refundable
charge will be made on all cancellations up to one week
prior to the start of a class and 10 days prior to the start of a workshop.
There will be no refund or transfer if registrant cancels within these
time frames.
