COMMUNITY OUTREACH

During the fall and winter quarters, regular “Conversations with Artists” (free to the public) are held on Monday afternoons in the school’s gallery. Area professionals from a wide range of art- related fields are invited to discuss their work, offering varied and stimulating presentations.

Community OutreachGallery openings at the beginning of each new exhibit are also open to the public, and occasionally include a talk by the exhibiting artist.

BSSS seeks opportunities to work with other local organizations to increase the interest in and exposure to the visual arts. During 2009, the school had a booth at the All Girls Conference at Booker T. Washington Community Center, participated in a “can-struction” as part of a regional Faces of Poverty exhibit/event, set up a booth and exhibit at the local Art in the Park, and plans to participate in September’s African American Festival in Staunton.

Ongoing exhibits are arranged at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center for the benefit of the residents.

A member of the school works with a young person from the local Office on Youth who has displayed an interest in art, providing an internship through docenting in the gallery and working in the school’s art library, as well as providing time for drawing and painting.
