Philip Geiger

Philip Geiger was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After receiving a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA from Yale University, he began his teaching career at Colorado State. Three years later, Philip joined the faculty of the University of Virginia where he taught from 1983-2017. The Geigers moved to Staunton in 2017 and Philip now paints full time. A figurative artist, his long admiration of Vermeer and Degas is evident in his interior paintings populated by models, friends and relatives. He has shown nationally for 40 years, most notably in Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, and Richmond. Philip’s work can be found in numerous collections and institutions, and his many reviews include the New York Times, Art in America, Art News, the New Criterion and the New Yorker’s “Best 10 Shows of the Year” list. Additionally, Philip has been a visiting artist at PAFA, MICA, NYStudioSchool, Indiana University, and numerous small colleges. More about Philip Geiger can be found here as well as in a short YouTube documentary by ArtPneuma.
