Let’s spend the summer getting to know our surroundings — and then making them more interesting. For this class, we will explore Staunton on foot, finding places to draw street scenes, buildings, and landscape elements (weather permitting). We will begin by capturing these scenes with precision — learning how to make drawings with the illusion of depth, attention to line weight and quality, and using linear perspective as a guide.
We will then explore ways to disrupt the image by simplifying, flattening, or layering with other drawn elements. As we build up a series of drawings, the process will begin to blur into an interplay between observed and abstracted compositions. Themes will likely emerge.
This is a great class for somebody interested in both observational drawing and in the role of the artist in shifting what we perceive.
