In this class, we’ll delve into the art of painting a complete portrait in a single sitting. Our primary focus will be on color, value, drawing, and clean brushwork. Drawing inspiration from the renowned impressionist portrait painters of the past, we’ll create a captivating portrait within the confines of a single sitting.
Our process begins with a quick and simple gesture to establish the composition on the canvas. Subsequently, we’ll quickly block in the large, simple features of the head, prioritizing the prominent shadow shapes of the skull before gradually transitioning to more intricate facial details. The cornerstone of our approach will be the construction of a clear light-shadow pattern, complemented by dramatic color changes that evoke a sense of life and energy.
Each day will begin with a demonstration of the process, followed by a day-long pose.
