Spring 2024
Classes & Workshops
Do you want to learn to draw or paint yet never have the time or courage? This beginner and intermediate class will guide you through the process of learning to see through an artist’s eye. Instructor Janly Jaggard will offer one-on-one instruction to show you how to work from direct observation as you experience drawing processes that lead you forward towards the medium of your choice.
If you have some experience but know there is more to learn, Janly will help you continue to improve your technical skills as you begin to develop your personal style. This class is not just a two-step program but is the door that opens to lasting skill building, practice and aesthetic success. A materials list provided upon registration.
In this four-week class we will explore summer’s light and warmth using watercolor to capture the fresh and vibrant colors. We will create full, finished watercolor paintings as well as “en-plein-air” watercolor sketches. Each class will start with a short presentation and demo and then we will quickly begin painting on location! We will explore how to choose and organize images and practice working quickly to capture the beauty of light and shadow. There will be lots of handouts and feedback. The class is suitable for anyone with at least a bit of experience with watercolor.
Designed to be informative, useful and visually rich, this exciting online workshop presents the major strategies of color used in the practice of painting. Open to all levels and all media, hands on projects will combine with presentations of color in the great tradition: Tonal Painting in the Baroque Era, Plein Air Painting in Impressionism, Color in the Early Moderns and Fauves, and Personal Color Choices in Expressionist and Abstract Painting.
Each class will include discussions of the materials and techniques of artmaking, the art history of each topic, a video demo by the instructor and an assigned painting project.
The student learning goals are: a better understanding of how color is used in art, how to better understand a personal use of color, and practice solving problems in color use. Students will upload projects into Canvas (provided free by the instructor) along with weekly critiques of student artwork by the instructor on Canvas.
Classes will be recorded on Zoom and sent to the students after each session.
